Playboy In The Air

Hugh Hefner is 82 years old today. To be perfectly honest, Hefner is responsible in part for all of us being able to share our sexual attitudes and outlooks on the Internet. This is a delightful period piece from 1969, showing the 'Playboy philosophy' at its glory peak. You can probably see the inspiration here for everything from Austin Powers to corporate branding to the creature comforts in air travel and more. It's just fascinating to watch, and it was all born here in Chicago, folks.

Wow! That's really a look back!

The various technological toys crack me up. In the middle, there's this big tape machine . . . it's for video!

And that music! Really does conjure up a different era.

I just bought Playboy for the first time in many, many years. I really did buy it for an article, the Playboy interview, in fact.

My, my how Playboy has changed!

As much respect as i have for the trailblazing that "Playboy Magazine" charted, and as influential as my father's copies were on my burgeoning sexuality (for ill or for good), i cannot seem to muster the reverance that others seem to feel for Hugh.
His daughter has long since been at the helm of this publication, and he appears to only be participating as a sort of nod to his former glory.
Also, has anyone seen "Girls Next Door"? Is it just me, or does Hugh look like a pathetic, doddering old man enslaved to Viagra and the peroxide blondes he refuses to see are far too young for him?
i would not deny an old man his final pleasures in life, i just don't understand the diefication he seems to engender from so many...

Laani -- It's a generational thing, I'm sure. You are absolutely right. Christie Hefner has guided the Playboy empire to so much more than what it used to be; she herself is a brilliant, savvy person at the helm. But Playboy and Hugh Hefner will always be one and the same... Just a reminder that even as he does look like that doddering old man on Viagra, it all had to start somewhere. And for the first 10-15 years of its existence, Playboy and Hefner were synonymous with sexual freedom and expression and reasonably responsible for you and I being able to talk about sex as we do.

My first encounter with Playboy was finding my father's stash of magazine's under his bed. We're not even going to talk about how the realization that my parents were sexual was on a pre-teen girl! In any case, Hugh is responsible for so much of the sexual revolution, so cheers to you Hef!

I've tagged you, darlin!
